Chinese Five Spices is a traditional combination of ground Star Anise, Fennel, Cloves, Cinnamon and Pepper.
The Chinese 5 Spices mixture is said to have been invented to encompass all five taste elements (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty) into one spice powder.
Add a teaspoon to some liquid to flavour a stir-fry or create a marinade or add a little to soups, and meat dishes. Five Spice powder is ubiquitous in many Chinese recipes.
